About the Department


The Department of English was established in the year 1970, the same year as the inception of the college and Post-Graduation course in this subject began in 2016. The department was established under the mentorship of Dr. R.P Singh and Dr. U.K. Dwivedi; both are eminent scholars of literature. The landmark achievement of the Department of English was the formation of Language Centre and Language lab which flourished under the efficient guidance of the founders specially Dr. U.K. Dwivedi but later this centre became an independent entity. At present Department of English comprises four faculty members namely Dr. Rashmi Jain, Dr. Shaista Irshad, Mrs. Divya Pandey and Dr. Vijay Tiwari. Three of them hold Ph.D. degrees and one has completed M.Phil. The faculty is striving hard to provide quality education to students through a combination of excellence in research and dedication to pedagogy. The faculty includes specialists in several areas of literary studies; for instance, Classical and Modern British Literature, Indian Literature, American Literature, New Literature and Literary Theory and Criticism. Dr Rashmi Jain has been awarded with Fever Shakti Award (author) by Fever FM 94.3 in 2019. All the faculty members are actively contributing as members of various academic and administrative committees of the college. Presently Dr. Anuja Saluja is the Convener of the department.

Academic Activities


The Department often organizes various workshops, lecture series, competitions, group discussions and presentations to meet the needs of students during the confines of strict bell schedule. The Department has conducted a National seminar entitled ‘Paradigm Shift in Literature and Media and its impact on Contemporary Society’ in the year 2010. In 2018 and 2019 it has also organized ‘Picture composition competition’ to improve the imaginative and writing skills of the budding artists. A Lecture Series entitled ‘Language through Literature’ has also been conducted in collaboration with Language Centre in 2018. Dr. Rashmi Jain and Dr. Vijay Tiwari also acted as the co-convener of programme organized by the Faculty Development Centre at ISDC. Dr. Rashmi Jain was the co-convener of Training cum workshop on E-Learning in Higher Education (7-13 Feb, 2019) and Orientation Programme(16 July -12 August, 2019). Dr. Vijay Tiwari was the co-convener of Training cum workshop on ‘Academic Writing in Humanities and Social sciences’(23 Feb. – 01 March 2019) and Training Programme on ‘Advances in Technology, Pedagogy and Educational Research’ (October 11-25, 2019).

Specific Awards/Achievements (students)

Vishwajeet Tiwari of B.A -1 got the second prize in Inter college Poetry Competition( English) held at Jagat Taran Degree college in 2019. 


All teachers of the department employ ICT techniques in teaching and ensure an interactive atmosphere. Creative methods like Movie screening and dramatic performances are involved to stir the young minds of the students along with PPT and lectures. It not only makes them aware about the plot but also helps them to understand the techniques, style of narration, human sentiments and emotions which induces a therapeutic and cathartic effect. This helps a lot in creating a balanced personality of the students. After the completion of units, the teachers evaluate the students' learning outcomes. The department celebrates important days like teachers' day, freshers party, farewell.

The Department has conducted a National seminar entitled ‘Paradigm shift in Literature and Media and its impact on contemporary society’ in the year 2010.

A three day workshop on ‘Art of Communication’ along with the Language Centre has been organized by the department of English from 13-15 Dec 2018.
